A Perspective on Earthquake-Volcano Interactions

چکیده

Introduction On average, some 120 strong earthquakes (M ≥ 6) and 60 volcanic eruptions occur somewhere in the world every year. Thus it shouldn’t be hugely surprising when news of a volcanic eruption follows news of a damaging earthquake somewhere else in the world by a week or less. Such newsworthy coincidences inevitably prompt the question from both the media and the public, “is this eruption related to that earthquake?” In this lecture, we examine why the answer has become more complicated (and interesting) than a simple “probably not” based on an appeal to statistical significance and Poisson processes [see Hill et al., 2002].

Seismic velocity structure in and around the Naruko volcano, NE Japan, and its implications for volcanic and seismic activities

Geofluids is important for understanding volcanic and earthquake generation processes. In this study, we obtained a detailed seismic velocity structure in and around the Naruko volcano, northeastern Japan, using data from a dense seismic observation network. We found a distinct seismic low-velocity zone (LVZ) beneath the Naruko volcano, with a diameter of nearly 10 to 20 km in the lower crust. ...

Spatial and temporal seismic velocity changes on Kyushu Island during the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake

Monitoring of earthquake faults and volcanoes contributes to our understanding of their dynamic mechanisms and to our ability to predict future earthquakes and volcanic activity. We report here on spatial and temporal variations of seismic velocity around the seismogenic fault of the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake [moment magnitude (Mw) 7.0] based on ambient seismic noise. Seismic velocity near the r...

Volcano-earthquake interaction at Mauna Loa volcano, Hawaii

[1] The activity at Mauna Loa volcano, Hawaii, is characterized by eruptive fissures that propagate into the Southwest Rift Zone (SWRZ) or into the Northeast Rift Zone (NERZ) and by large earthquakes at the basal decollement fault. In this paper we examine the historic eruption and earthquake catalogues, and we test the hypothesis that the events are interconnected in time and space. Earthquake...

Mud volcano response to the 4 April 2010 El Mayor‐Cucapah earthquake

[1] Mud volcanoes sometimes respond to earthquakes, but the mechanisms by which earthquakes trigger changes in ongoing eruptions or initiate new eruptions are not completely understood. We measured gas discharge at a field of mud volcanoes near the Salton Sea, southern California, before and after the 4 April 2010 El Mayor‐Cucapah earthquake and observed an increase in gas flux immediately foll...

Abandonment of Minoan palaces on Crete in relation to the earthquake induced changes in groundwater supply

Mysterious abandonment of palaces on Crete during the Late Minoan period was always a challenging problem for archeologists and geologists. Various hypotheses explained this event by effects of tsunamis, earthquakes or climatic changes that were caused by the volcanic eruption of the Santorini volcano. While each of them or their possible combination contributed to the abandonment of palaces an...
